I knew I was i n for a great stay at a “grand hotel” as my cab drew up for the front door of the Hotel DE L’Europe in Amsterdam. A member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World, this hotel is also known as the “Royal Palace of Amsterdam.” It also has a perfect waterfront on the banks of the Amstel River. The hotel underwent an extensive renovation in 2010. A variety of artwork from Dutch masters is located on the property.
The hotel is the location of a two-star Michelin restaurant and offers one of the city’s most authentic afternoon teas. And, the “Freddy Bar” (Best Bartender in the Netherlands 2014) is here also. I enjoyed an excellent dinner while staying at the hotel and thought breakfast was superb.
My very spacious suite overlooked the river and featured a beautiful bathroom with double sinks, a separate water closet and a separate bathtub and shower. I had a comfortable bed which was probably king size which is a rarity in Europe. There was a sitting area near the windows plus a small desk for working.
While the hotel is a historic landmark, it also boasts an anti-aging spa, gym, swimming pool, business center, private parking, and a boat jetty. The lobby has several seating areas and ends with a bar overlooking the river.
At the DE L’ Europe, each room is individually decorated and feature Bose surround sound, Ipod docking stations, and Ipad directories. Dutch master paintings have been replicated in each room. Many rooms feature a balcony. They offer several suite categories including some with a jacuzzi tub and/or a round bed.
Enjoy dining al fresco on their riverside terrace in good weather. Or, enjoy a gourmet culinary experience in their award-winning Bord’Eau restaurant. A traditional British tea is served daily in the trendy Promenade eatery.
