This Swiss city is located in the heart of the country, below its famed trio of mountains – the Eiger, the Mönch, and the Jungfrau, and between two lakes – Brienz and Thun. Winter offers both downhill and cross country skiing; families will prefer to stay in the Beatenburg, Brienz-Axalp and Habkern areas. A winter cruise on Lake Thun is quite an experience – remember to dress warm! From mid-December through February, Interlaken is turned into a beautiful winter wonderland with ice skating and similar activities.
Warm weather activities are varied and include hiking, biking, horseback riding, water sports, fishing, and visiting nearby limestone caves. Plus, mingling with the locals at whatever festival(s) occur during your visit. A glacier tour is interesting and informative. Helicopter rides offer views of spectacular scenery.
Local cuisine is more than cheese fondue and chocolate. Gourmetstübli is a one-star Michelin Guide eatery. This area is also known for its meringues with cream. Enjoy a coffee with schnapps. These have names such as kaffeefertig or pflümlischumli, and make a great nightcap.
