Hawke’s Bay, on the eastern coast of North Island produces some award winning wines. This region sustained a damaging earthquake in 1931 which raised the sea floor by eight feet. 6000+ tradesmen from around the country came to Napier, a small town in that area currently known as the Art Deco “Capital of the world.” And, they worked to rebuild the devastated town. Then, architects from around the world went there to provide their personal touches to the new buildings.
Mission Estates is the oldest winery in the Hawke’s Bay region, having become a winery about 20 years ago. Once a historical seminary, today it offers sweeping vistas of vineyards and Napier. As of this writing, the wine tastings here are complimentary.
Another area winery is Craggy Range Winery located at the base of the Te Mata Peak escarpment. Craggy Range has named its winery Giants Winery to commemorate the local legend of “The Fallen Giant.” For a wine and food pairing experience, try their Terroir Restaurant. And, their clams come highly recommended. This winery is a very popular wedding venue. There are also two cottages on the estate.
Next, and offering spectacular views of Cape Kidnappers is one of the area’s newest wineries, Elephant Hill. This winery is located in Te Awanga. Its chardonnay is very popular.
Consider a bicycle tour around New Zealand vineyards. The country has 19 official bicycle trails and three of them are located in the Hawke’s Bay region. One of the local cycling tours starts at Ash Ridge Wines. One of their most popular wines is the 2011 Arneis, an Italian white wine which pairs very well with cold cuts and cheese.
