Is located in the heart of Dublin and is comprised of four stately Georgian townhouses which were renovated into a charming and luxurious 5-star hotel in the late 1990’s. A member of the prestigious “Leading Hotels of the World” organization, it is also home to Ireland’s only two-star Michelin Restaurant, Patrick Guilbaud. In cooler months, crackling peat fires welcome you to the lobby and other public rooms. The Merrion also features one of the largest private art collections – from the 19th and 20th centuries – in Ireland. If you enjoy their Art Afternoon Tea, take note many of the pastries are inspired from paintings in the collection.
There are two period gardens at the Merrion and I was lucky to walk through part of them on a recent visit – simply lovely. Both were designed by a noted Irish landscape artist, Jim Reynolds. Lady Mornington’s Garden, is the smaller garden and it connects the Main House to the Garden Wing. The larger garden offers waiter service in warmer months so guests can wine and dine al fresco.
142 guest rooms and suites are ready with classic, elegant furnishings. In the Garden Wing, the décor is inspired by Irish landscape painter, Paul Henry’s works. Modern amenities such as queen or king size beds, complimentary WiFi, AC, remote-accessed voice mail, and cable TV are featured within each room. Beautiful Italian marble can be found in the bathrooms and many offer separate bathtubs and showers. They also have some triple rooms, which is almost unheard of abroad. Rollaway beds and cribs are available. They have a few handicap accessible rooms.
Rooms and suites in the Main House are decorated and furnished in keeping with an 18th century Georgian Townhouse. All of the modern amenities listed above are also available in these rooms. These rooms offer a view of the hotel’s gardens or Dublin’s government buildings.
In addition to their gourmet eatery, you can enjoy Afternoon Tea either in the garden during summer or inside the spacious drawing rooms the rest of the year. Pub food is available at The Cellar Bar and modern Irish specialties are served up at the Cellar Restaurant. This bar is located inside the original 18th century wine vaults. You might want to try the whisky tasting experience at Bar No. 23. The Merrion restaurants and bars are a favorite with locals also.
The Tethra Spa is open daily and there is a swimming pool, steam room, and gym also. And, the staff is happy to provide you with a local jogging map.
Venues for weddings, life celebrations and business meetings are also available on the hotel property.
